Memories of the Ceramic Lighted Christmas Tree

Ceramic Christmas Tree copy

How many of you have memories of your Grandmother’s ceramic light up Christmas Tree? I sure do.

I am sure at one point I use to think the tree was tacky and would never imagine wanting one for my own. I saw this cute tree last week and I knew I had to have it as brought back so many fun memories of my Grandparents around Christmas time.  I remember the ceramic tree coming to Christmas dinner and my Poppa carrying it in to the house in a box with special care.

When my tree was being packed up in a box with special care to come home and I realized all those little light bulbs come out, it brought back a memory of how my Grandparents had glued those lights in place on their tree.  I remember this tree being very special to my Grammy and I wish I remembered or knew more about her special tree.  Now that she has been gone for 10 years I am glad I came across my own special nostalgic tree.

Everyone that see’s it says “my Grandma had one like that!” I had an older lady tell me “every old lady has one of those!” I laughed and then of course realized I guess I am now one of “those” old ladies!

I hope your family is building special memories around the holidays like ours is. We celebrate Christmas as the birth of our Savior Jesus Christ.  I have been trying to instill in my kids to look at ways to spread Christmas Kindness.  We have a jar that they have been writing down ways they’ve helped spread kindness and we will read them on Christmas Eve.  On Christmas day, if everyone is feeling better from their colds, we have plans to go help the homeless and hand out needed supplies like gloves, hats, coats and toothbrushes with other families.  My hope is to continue the tradition so that the kids grow up remembering the real reason for the season and not just a time of getting gifts.

Merry Christmas from Real Southern Living!

Holiday Home Tour 2012

Holiday Home Tour 2012 07Holiday Home Tour 2012 12

After about a week of Christmas Tree stand drama and trying to get the tree to stand without falling over it is finally looking like Christmas around the house.  The stockings are hung and the Christmas Tree has been decorated 3 times!

I was rather frustrated last weekend trying to get into the Christmas spirit of decorating and kind of thankful now for the chance to re-do decorating this weekend.  It was much more peaceful and I love the added changes I made.

Even Mokey the monkey has gotten into Christmas spirit and finding how a cute 8 yr old boy left him hanging on the bench put a smile on my face to remind me what Christmas is really about.

Yes, the tree saga was enough to have driven this Mom to want to just skip Christmas this year and throw out the tree but, in the end it was all meant to be.  Even if I strung the tree with lights 3 times and had pine needles and ornaments everywhere all week long the final result is that it improved each time I decorated the tree.

I got to reflect on the special ornaments that have special memories on our tree and thankfully nothing was broken when the tree went timber.  We added Mr. Christmas this year to the tree and he is fun.  He turns your lights on and off with voice activation but, he also plays Christmas Carols and blinks the lights to the music…okay he can be really annoying but, again the kids LOVE him!

I tried to keep things simple and just put out things here or there around our existing decor to remind us it is Christmas time and to remember the reason for the season.

Happy Holiday’s and a good time to remember "Your home is about how you feel when you walk through the front door.  It is about your family, life and dreams together.”  All the other ‘stuff’ isn’t what is most important, it is about the cherish memories you share together and what better time to remind us of that then Christmas.

Fall Thanksgiving Tree

Thanksgiving Tree 002
Every year we do a Thankful Tree and this year I decided on a little twist on the tradition. We collect branches and twigs every year to make our tree and then hang paper leaves with what we are thankful for.  This year we have added the wax leaves I posted about in my last post.

Thanksgiving Tree 004
Gather some branches or twigs when you are collecting beautiful leaves. Arrange them in a vase or large jar with something to weight down the vase and help hold the branches in place.

Take your wax leaves and tie them onto the branches with twine or jute.  Now, I haven’t completely finished the tree yet but, I will have the kids write on some cute tags of what they are grateful for and hang them from the tree.

I gathered up extra leaves to set at the base of the tree.  I just love looking at all the leaves we dipped in wax.

I also hung some pom-pom puffs from the light hanging over the table and just in case you missed the tutorial on how to make the puffs or the wax leaves you can click here.

Faux Glaze–Antiqued Kitchen Cabinets

Kitchen Cabinet Glaze 005Kitchen Cabinet Glaze 002
I painted my Kitchen Cabinets last spring and had planned on Antiquing them but, just never knew the right method or color glaze I wanted to use…until last week!  Now I really liked them painted white but, there were parts where I really needed to go back and touch up with the paint.  I decided that the glaze was much easier to hide my imperfect paint job and while I had the idea fresh in my mind I went for it.

Kitchen Cabinet Glaze 003Kitchen Cabinets Glaze 006
I took 1 cup Faux Glaze to 1/4 cup black custom color paint that I used on my front door.  See below picture for paint recipe. Mixed it up and then used a brush to paint it on all over.  Then I took a wet rag and wiped off what I didn’t want to.  I played with the inside of one of the cupboards first before I totally went for it.
Custom Black Door Color
Custom Black door color above mixed in Behr Semi Gloss Paint.  Below is Benjamin Moore Cabinet Coat paint I had color matched to Behr Swiss Coffee that is white with a tint of cream.
Cabinet Paint
Overall I like how the glaze popped the details in the crown rope molding going around the cabinets.  It also just gave an outline and softened the cabinets to be more of worn antique finish and ties in my black antiqued kitchen island.

Simple Fall Decorating

Fall Decorating 001
Two weeks ago I showed you my Fall Front Door Porch Décor.  This week I thought I would show the few simple things I did to bring Fall Décor inside the house.  Took just a few minutes and nothing expensive or too crafty.
Fall Decorating 004
I started with 2 Fall Leaf Garland’s I have had for several years and come in handy for easy Fall Decorating.  I draped them on my front entry table and across my mantel.

Fall Decorating 002
On the front entry table I added this Happy Harvest sign that I had in my Fall stash.  It is just a piece of wood painted with a vinyl lettering saying.  I propped it into a small easel to let the Garland flow underneath it.
Fall Decorating 003
Next I added Plastic or Grapevine Pumpkins I have picked up at Walmart, Target and the Dollar Store that ranged for $1-$2.50 each.  I set them in around and on top of the things already setting on my table and or mantle. I pick up a few new pumpkins every year and have added to my collection to sit around the house.  This shiny green one and the Grapevine pumpkins are in the Target Dollar Spot…hurry and run to buy them because my store only had a few left.  They are my all time favorites because they are different! I love finding pumpkins that are not the traditional looking ones.
There you go easy and inexpensive fall decorating!

Fall Is On It’s way…

Fall Front Door Decorating 001
We have been having cool morning temperature’s and with the start of September it was time to bring out some of the Fall Décor.  I am not ready for full Halloween or Fall to come out completely but, I was ready for Fall colors to adorn the Front Door.

Fall Front Door Decorating 002
I saw these fantastic Mum’s already potted at Wal-Mart for $15.96 yesterday and thought you know what that is a good deal for those huge plants.  It would have cost me more to put something like that together myself and it saved me time which made it really worth it.
Fall Front Door Decorating 003
I broke out the Fall wreath I’ve used the last few years that isn’t pumpkins but, pears with golden yellow and brown. Got out the brown ribbon and hung it up like I did here.
I love the new inviting and welcoming colors.

Real Trash To Treasure Chair

I really did find this chair on the curb about 8 years ago.  I had my husband cut the plywood seat a few months later and yes it has taken me this long to finally paint and do something fun with it!
Chair Makeover 001

So first I spray painted it with the Rust-oleum Heirloom White. I love the ultra cover spray paint with the primer included.  It covers so much better than the regular spray paint and I use less paint.
I bought a foam pad for about $6 and then cut it to fit the plywood seat that my husband had made for it years ago.  When he had made the seat I had covered it with batting and fabric but, it wasn’t comfortable to sit in and needed the extra foam.
Chair Makeover 002
I stapled gunned my fabric (used the extra fabric that matched my drapes) to the seat and set it back on top of my chair and that’s it!  Why did I take so long to do it! I love it and my husband does too now that I finished one of those lurking projects with junk I have collected!
Chair Makeover 003
Only cost me the $6 for the foam because I had all the other supplies to complete my trash to treasure project!
