My Favorite Things of 2012

I am linking up to 320 Sycamore Favorite Things party.  I look forward to this every year and contemplate my favorite things many weeks before.  It is so hard for me to decide what my favorite things are (or narrow down the list) and yet I can have a somewhat running list in my head but, then sit down to write this post and totally draw a blank! Let’s see how I do…

My favorite people of course are my family.

Johnson Family 01 copy

My favorite new book is The Child Whisperer and anyone who deals with children should have this book…even if the children are adults too! What a healing book this has been for me and yet so helpful with understanding each of my 5 children in a new light.

I love my Canon T1i camera and I bought a Camera Coat for it that protects it from getting banged up and wet.

I drink Spark every morning and it has helped me to have the energy I need and provide vitamins as well to help me with exercising.

Advocare Spark - Fruit Punch

I also love the Herbal Cleanse from Advocare and it jumped started my healthy eating and weight loss. I also drink the fiber drinks a few times a week.

Advocare Herbal Cleanse - Peaches and Cream

I love herbal tea’s on cold days and I found this Sugar Cookie Sleigh Ride at the store and loved it!

I love Bob’s Sweet Stripes Peppermint’s any shapes or sizes but, the brand is the best soft mint’s for Christmas time.

I love all the deals with unique gifts at Groop Dealz Boutique.

Downeast

Downeast Clothing – I buy clothes for my daughters and myself when sales are going on. I love the modest dresses, skirts and undershirts and t’s.

My favorite store to frequent in person is Ross. I love finding deals in this store and I have a routine in the way I shop the store. I have found some great clothes and shoes but, I love the decorative pillow isle and kitchen dish isles too. I got my ceramic egg holders-I use as jewelry holders- for under $5 each and all new hangers for my closet.

Last I love Pinterest…I am really addicted…like bad but, I love it and have learned so many great new tips from cleaning to crafting…so that makes it okay right???!!!

And look at that I came up with 12 without even trying all in honor of 12/12/12 Favorite Things Party! I can’t wait to read about everyone’s favorite things. I always pick out a few to try.

Be You Be Beautiful–Dressing Your Truth 2012

I had an amazing time at the Dressing Your Truth conference in Salt Lake City this past weekend.  I have met beautiful friends from across the United States this past year and it was a special reunion getting to see them and connect.
Here are some of the highlights:
BYBB 5
I received a pre-release copy of Carol Tuttle’s new book The Child Whisperer and had it signed by her.

This book launches October 23rd and I have already read it! It is a must read for everyone! I am also part of her book launch team and it has been very exciting to be a part of.

I have had some big aha’s about myself as well as ways I can be a better parent, aunt, teacher, ect to the children I come in contact with.  A must read for everyone whether you have children or not, your children are baby’s or in their 50’s or if you just want to learn more about your own unique nature. This book will literally heal family relationships and misunderstandings. If you can understand your own true nature along with the nature’s of those whom you are around it will bring a level of understanding that will bring you peace and comfort. What an exciting adventure it is to be part of sharing the message of this amazing book!
BYBB 4
The first night of the conference I was invited on stage to share about living my truth as a type 2 with a secondary type 3 nature. Within each of the 4 types you find some differences and usually that has to do with our secondary nature that makes us each uniquely beautiful.
BYBB 3
Talk about nerve racking for me and so surreal standing on stage with the famous Carol Tuttle.  She really does make us type 2’s feel comfortable like you are having a normal conversation…yet 300 people were listening and watching! Of course I enjoyed going back to my seat and letting all the anxiety leave my body!
BYBB 2
The Parade of Beauty is always fun to see the 4 different types get on stage and share how uniquely beautiful we all are.  I was proud of us type 2’s for stepping out of our comfort level and strutting our stuff in our own flowing way…
BYBB 7 copyBYBB 6 copy
Then of course some of my beautiful type 2 friends that I just love.  I miss them so much already and realizing 2 years until the next conference is way too long to go without seeing them.
BYBB 1
There was so much I learned and took away with me.  I just loved being able to connect with women in a way that was so peaceful and loving without any judgment or contention in the room.  Whether type 1, 2, 3 or 4 it is amazing how 300 women can all be together in such peace and harmony with no competition or judging going on.  I love knowing my true nature and so excited to keep progressing living my truth.
*Now until Oct 9th 2012 you can purchase the Dressing Your Truth course for $99 plus receive a $20 gift card to the online store through my referral link.  That is a 67% savings! www.stacey.dressingyourtruth.com/spreadthelove

My Bag Is Packed

I picked up a few packing tips that I’ve learned after visiting 16 states this year via our family road trips. I am excited that this up coming trip I get to travel by a 4 hour airplane ride instead of a 30 hour drive out west.  Whether car or plane I have used just one carry on piece of luggage and purse. I have developed a system to get the most out of every inch of packing space.
Packing for DYT type 2 trip 001 copy
I told you a few weeks ago I was going to the Dressing Your Truth Conference in Salt Lake City and the time has arrived to start packing.

True to my type 2 nature I have planned out my outfits and picked things that can mix and match.  I love that when you know how to Dress Your Truth everything in your closet can mix and match.  Instead of saying “I have nothing to wear” I had quite the opposite reaction…I have so many choices that are all my favorites. This is what I came up with after trying several different combinations to come up with the most comfortable, most versatile and best for traveling as a Dressing Your Truth Type 2.

packing for DYT type 2 trip 002 copy
I have 2 skirts- denim ruffle and gray lace. 2 pairs of skinny jeans, 3 cardigan sweaters- with coordinating tops underneath. 1 lace top and matching necklace, earrings and belts grouped together. I have packed my fitness gear including my athletic shoes and also my gray dress boots. I am wearing a pair of my favorite gray wool flats, comfortable outfit and jacket on the plane.  I have several options of dressing up or dressing down an outfit and yet still be comfortable for the activities. None of the items are bulky except for my shoes.  I got all of that in my suit case.
I have a variety of activities to attend while at the conference and I don’t want to leave anything behind I might need. I have been asked to share how my secondary type 3 nature plays a role in my life plus I need to make sure my outfit reflects my secondary…anyone of you DYT gals guess which item I packed to wear for my 2 minute spotlight?
Packing for DYT type 2 trip 003 copy
Once I had everything planned out I then roll up my clothes so I can fit more in my carry on suit case.  I also put my jeans and thicker heavier items in the center and then build around them tucking my shoes on the side.  I can see my boots are going to take up some room.  I refuse to pay money to check a bag though and I have narrowed everything down that I know it will all fit.  A well designed carry on suit case that has nice pockets on the top inside is most helpful. I roll up my under garments or smaller items and tuck them in those top inside pockets and can fit a ton of stuff in my suit case that way. No inch of space goes wasted in my bag.
I also carry a nice size purse when I travel by plane to keep my small toiletries handy for security check.  My make-up, camera and jewelry I pack in my purse.  Just in case the plane is packed and I have to gate check my carry on I know I have the stuff that would be really hard to go without if my luggage were lost. {Update at the last minute my bag had to be checked and I am so glad I followed my intuition on packing my personal items with me}
I love traveling in the fall with cool crisp air and looking forward to some time alone to think, ponder and set some new goals for myself.

Weight Loss– How I lost 15 pounds in 3 Months!

I wanted to share my personal success with weight loss.  I have received a lot of compliments lately and people asking how I lost the weight. I know many of women struggle with their weight.  For me I just wanted to get healthy.  I had been working out like crazy and just wasn’t seeing the scale move.  I thought I was eating right…I hadn’t drank soda in 3 years and I thought I was eating well balanced meals. I Dress My Truth which automatically made me look thinner and helped me to be confident in my own skin.  I still knew I wasn’t at my absolute best healthy weight and I knew I needed to get at least 10 more pounds shed after having 5 babies.
Weight Loss

{Disclaimer…this is my personal story and choices for how I went about my weight loss. I didn’t receive any compensation for the products I used to write this post.}
In May I decided I needed to do something different and I was talking with a few ladies at the gym about my challenge of working out but, not seeing the scale move.  They had recently learned about a company called Advocare and encouraged me to try the Herbal Cleanse and I used Peaches and Cream Flavor.  They had recommended it to several people who with in 10 days saw success and that it would really help to boost my metabolism.  It made sense that I needed to cleanse my body.  I was having a few other minor health challenges and so I decided to give it a try.
Advocare Herbal Cleanse - Peaches and Cream
Along with the 10 day cleanse I prepared myself I would need to change my diet for optimal results.  I took a month or so gearing up and mentally preparing myself for no white refined sugar, white refined flour, animal dairy products and cheese.  I prepared myself to eat lean meats (like turkey, chicken and fish), lots of fresh veggies (steamed sweet potato was my favorite for lunch), fruit, almond or coconut milk and whole plain nuts.  I just kept thinking to myself I wanted to eat as close to its natural form.  I didn’t worry so much as to how much I was eating but, that if I were hungry or felt like snacking I ate following these guidelines.
I also bought Spark Energy Drink – Fruit Punch flavor to drink when I woke up in the morning to help get me moving and not get tired for my work out.
Advocare Spark - Fruit Punch
The morning of the second day I saw my scale move 1 pound.  Now 1 pound isn’t much but, I hadn’t seen the scale move at all so this was motivation to me.  I came down to the kitchen only to find my Husband had left a huge cinnamon role from his early morning bible study class sitting on the counter…oh temptation for sure…but, I told myself “you just lost 1 pound in the first day so don’t give up now!”  I didn’t I continued on for the full 10 days and after just 2 days I didn’t even crave the sugar like I thought I would.  By 10 days I had lost 7 pounds.  Almost a pound a day.  I felt great and my body didn’t crave the processed foods or sugar.  It gave me motivation to keep going.
I continued to exercise and focused some effort on to weight lifting and building muscle and eased up on the cardio. I also continued to stay as close to the diet as I could with little to no sugar, only whole grains and cut out as much processed foods as I could. I read the labels on everything to see the added sugar it has. I also drink the Spark Energy drink every morning.
In June I was able to listen to Dr. Daniel Amen speak in Atlanta.  He talked about diet and exercise in relates to our brain.  He has been doing some work with Franklin Covey and The 5 Choices content they teach. The foods we eat do make a huge difference in how our body functions.  I was feeling pretty good about the changes I had made in my diet and especially after seeing pictures of brain scans of unhealthy people.  We don’t think about taking care of our brain and our brain is the number 1 thing we should be thinking about when it comes to our body.  Our brain function effects our moods, our physical abilities, our mental capacities and when we are addicted to the wrong foods it makes a huge impact on our own quality of life!
Our brain uses 25% of the calories we eat to function on…what are we feeding our brain?  Our brains need water in take…He says we should drink half our body weight in ounces in water every day!  Drinking my water made a huge success in my weight loss.
Again all this was motivation to keep going and to live a healthy lifestyle that I was creating for myself and my family.  I spoke with Dr. Amen after his lecture and he sent me out his wives cookbooks that are full of healthy eating tips and recipes.
cookbookbook
I still falter and my family and I still have some foods that we give into eating…like sugar treats every once in awhile. This is a process of getting healthy and it feels good to be on the right path.  I was able to maintain my weight loss on a cross country road trip this summer.  I looked for healthy foods to eat at fast food restaurants and it wasn’t easy.  I found it interesting that I was repulsed by seeing fried greasy food and I craved salads and veggies after a long day’s drive. The pictures of unhealthy brains came to mind for sure. For about a month because of our road trip and Summer plans I didn’t really exercise like I had been. I was eating right though and I still lost more weight.
So as of today I lost approximately 15 pounds since the beginning of May.  I have gone down a size in clothes. I feel great and on the days I slip up and eat something I shouldn’t because it was just there in front of me…I usually regret it and I don’t feel well afterwards.  I have learned to listen to my body and learned that certain foods just aren’t good for me. I have learned healthy eating habits and how important it is that I pay attention to what I am feeding my brain.  I also am striving to switch my family over to better eating as well.
If you are struggling with your weight or health I hope that my story gives you hope and encouragement to make the changes necessary to get healthy!  Research the path you want to take and go for it! I know you won’t regret it!

Closet Organizing–Clothes Hangers

Closet Organizing 003
Here’s a peak at the project I’ve been working on…my closet full of Dressing Your Truth type 2 clothes.

I’ve been hanging out in Ross way too much (I am addicted to that store) and I found these gray velvet hangers.  I’ve been wanting these type of hangers but, they were always black and I never wanted to splurge for them.  My husband is a DYT type 4, Mr. Organized I call him, and bought the black hangers from Costco a few months back. It made such a difference on space in his closet so, when I saw the gray I grabbed what they had.

Closet Organizing 001
You can see I had the white plastic hangers before and thought I was pretty organized but, wow what a difference it made on space.  Of course I was purging as I went but, I was able to condense a lot together.
Closet Organizing 002
I had bought 70 hangers and I ran out!  Yes even after purging I have a lot of clothes but, I hang everything including t-shirts, pants, skirts, dresses and blouses. Went back to Ross and they had no more gray hangers…what was I going to do?  I found another Ross not far from where I was running errands a few days later and they had more!  I went ahead and bought cream ones and 2 different gray plus I found the hangers with the clips from my skirts/pants so that I had plenty! I have lots of extra hangers and space in my closet for new treasured DYT type 2 clothes.  Of course while at the 2nd Ross I found some more great finds.

Dressing Your Truth Spread The Love
Oh yeah, that pile of clothes I purged I will pick a few things out at a time to put up for a blog sale.  Stay tuned…

Necklace Organizer

Project #6
Necklace organizer 002
I love this Necklace Organizer/Holder/Display that hangs above my dresser!  I started Dressing My Truth 2 years ago and before then I rarely wore necklaces.  {You can read more about my DYT Journey here.}I didn’t know what kind of necklaces to buy or wear.  Well, I don’t have that problem any more! I love wearing all kinds of accessories and I especially love knowing which kind of accessories or necklaces will honor my true nature.  I had a slight problem…I didn’t have any place to keep all these great accessories I’ve acquired over the last 2 years without them being a tangled up mess.  This is a great solution if you have the same problem!

Necklace Organizer 001
Forgive me because I forgot to take pictures as I went.  When I was spraying the frames for the 1st project of year, the Memory Wall, I spray painted an old frame (it use to have a mirror but, was broken).  I took a piece of left over fabric from a no sew curtain I’m working on for the Master Bathroom and staple gunned it to the back of the frame. Then I used a café curtain rod from Wal-Mart for about $3 and had my husband screw it into the frame…however husband will tell you to go buy shorter screws so they don’t pop through the wood frame. On your 1st and only trip to Wal-Mart buying your rod and screws go to the bathroom isle and pick up these shower curtain hangers for around $7 for a package of 12 to hang your necklaces from.  I ended up using a small amount of black craft paint to cover the new silver screws holding the rod in place. Hang on the wall and enjoy!
Now my necklaces are a piece of Art!
Necklace Organizer for under $15!
Supplies: Frame, Café Rod, Shower Curtain Hangers, Short Screws and a piece of fabric to fit the back….and your necklaces of course!

Inexpensive Tricks to Updating Your Wardrobe

4 Dye Tips
One of my most popular blog post is a tutorial on how I dyed a few clothing items.  Click here to read. I have done several other dye baths over the last few years and had some great success in updating a few items for my daughter and I that were more conducive to Dressing Our Truths. I’ve toned down an orange sweater and workout top using Pearl Gray. I also found my daughters favorite sweater on clearance in the same color she already had so we dyed it!

This morning I came across this article about dying tips and I wanted to share.  I was in the sauna at the gym {I love the Sauna as you can sit in there and sweat liked you work out while you read and learn things with only lifting a finger to pick up your magazine!}…it seems all the magazines are out dated but, this one said February so I thought it was current…it is from last year…Lucky Magazine February 2011! None the less I’m glad I picked it up!
Dye tip #1
dye tip 1
So this tip is pretty much the basic dying that I show you in my tutorial.  They do things slightly different but, the concept is the same taking light to dark.
Dye Tip #2
dye tip 2
This tip is about dying cottons, silks and synthetics. Again pretty much using the same Rit dye method but, they do it slightly different. What intrigued me the most with this was how they took dark colored clothes to light colors and I’m guessing they use the color reducer…they don’t share how they did that!  I need to do some more research into how they did this because taking something black to a pretty blue color would be wonderful for all of us who dress our truths and don’t wear black!
Dye Tip #3
dye tip 3
This tip is for dying Cashmere and Wool and suggest using an acid dye by Jacquard…it uses vinegar not acid so don’t get scared like I did!  The article suggest is cost about $4.69 at http://www.wardrobesupplies.com/. {FYI..I’m just passing along the info and in no way affiliated with the magazine or website or getting compensated}
Dye Tip #4
dye tip 4
This one really intrigued me and I have wondered how to dye leather. I’ve tried spray painting leather and it doesn’t work well…spray paint works fine on synthetic shoes but, not leather. They show in tip 2 taking black leather shoes to white and in tip 4 they answered my question on the leather dye. How many times do you find a comfortable pair of shoes or have a pair you love but, they need to be a different color or just given new life?  Here is your answer! Tarrago Leather dye $6.95 at Wardrobe Supplies.
Again this article is found here online and you can go read up and watch the video’s as well.  I think I will be ordering some leather dye to try!
